Below are some suggested routes. I lived in Chowk, so my knowledge slants toward the countryside north and west of the city.
There are many low-traffic, low-speed country roads to explore. Don't be shy to head out without a clear plan. Google Maps satellite imagery is your friend here!
Touring cyclists have written some nice accounts of their time in India, including in Uttar Pradesh. The journals at crazyguyonabike are always good inspiration.
Route | Distance | Description | GPX file | Map |
---|---|---|---|---|
Airbase loop | 48 km | This is a good, fast loop that mostly avoids main roads and covers some nice countryside. The road north of the airbase can be rather busy. I didn't explore much beyond the airbase, but I suspect there's also good cycling to the east of Sitapur Road. | [GPX] | [Ride with GPS] |
Ghaila loop | 16km | Mountain bike recommended for approx. 1.5mi of cobbles. The bridge across the Gomti River is currently a primitive wooden bridge on pontoons and is removed during the monsoon season (roughly June through September). | [GPX] | [Ride with GPS] |
Indira Barrage | 58km | A nice ride through newer areas of Lucknow, adjoining countryside, and canals. | [GPX] | [Ride with GPS] |
Mall - Kakori loop | 52 mi / 84km | This route passes through mango orchards near the town of Mall, visits Kakori village (famous for its kebabs, lassi, and a Sufi shrine), and returns to Lucknow on a frontage road of the newly-constructed Agra Expressway. | [GPX] | [Ride with GPS] |
Riverside | 8km (one-way) | Lucknow is far along in turning much of the banks of the Gomti River into parkland. A concrete trail is mostly complete along the north side of the Gomti River from approximately Daliganj bridge to just short of Lohia Path / Gomti Barrage. There is also a trail along parts of the southern side. This is a convenient link from Chowk / Daliganj to Indira Nagar, and a good alternative to Nadwa Road & Birbal Sahani Marg, which it parallels. There are a few portions of sand, and you'll need to dodge boys playing cricket. | This trail doesn't yet show on any maps |
